frequently asked Questions

1.0 What is a poyinzi?

A poyinzi or duoyinzi (破音字 or 多音字) is a Chinese character with multiple readings. Westerners also call it homograph. A normal Chinese standard dictionary for English or German has more than 500 poyinzi. Some of them are quite often. In modern Chinese texts is the particle "de" without a tone mark frequently found but it is also present as "dí" in the second tone and "dì" in the fourth tone. The letter two readings are only used in combination with another character. For example: 的确 "díquè" indeed; really or 目的 "mùdì" aim; goal. One purpose of Chinese to Pinyin Converter was to translate the duoyinzi of a text into the right reading.

2.0 How to change font size, color, and style?

KangLin - Chinese to Pinyin Converter is no text editor. The characters are written in unicode. You are free to use any kind of text editor for font changes. For this purpose use the 'copy and paste' function as usual. However, there is also a 'format' function in the context menu popup of each textbox.

3.0 How to create Pinyin?

Write conventional Pinyin into the third textbox, and click button "Pinyin Input". For ü use v, üe use vu, and for capital vowels write A, E, O with cipher 1, 2, 3, or 4 behind the letter.

4.0 Why are some Chinese characters not converted into pinyin?

There are two reasons for not converted Chinese characters:

1. The Chinese character is a poyinzi and the data context is not included in Chinese to Pinyin Converter.

2. The Chinese character is not in the lexicon at all.
(Chinese to Pinyin Converter includes more than 6400 simplified Chinese characters.)

To check this, use 'drag & drop' or 'copy & paste' function and paste the Chinese character from the third into the second textbox and hover over it with your mouse. If an entry is shown in the right-hand textbox, the Chinese character might be a poyinzi. If no entry is shown, the character is not included in the lexicon. Hint: The conversion of the poyinzi are suggestions. Sometimes, misinterpretings are possible.

5.0 How to create a word list without Excel?

For those who do not have Excel.

To create a word list with characters in first and Pinyin in second column, write the words one after another into first textbox, click button "Pinyin Context" or "Pinyin+all Poyinzi", in third textbox the pinyin words will also appear one after another. Now select the Chinese words in first textbox with right click to open the context menu popup, choose "Select all", and paste it to the first column of the text editor of your choice. Procede with converted Pinyin in third textbox in the same way, and paste it to the second column.

6.0 Why does Chinese to Pinyin Converter no lexeme separation?

It was not the purpose of KangLin - Chinese to Pinyin Converter to separate Chinese text in his lexemes. Anyway, you can separate the Chinese Input by hand and do your own lexeme separation.
